Katherine and Ethan are two teenagers living two very different lives just miles from each other.
Ethan Rass has lived in the same single wide trailer all of his life. His mother works two jobs, his father drinks day and night and Ethan learned very early on how to take care of himself and more importantly, to keep out of the way. But on a cold night in December he is forced to intervene and tragedy strikes.
And then there is Katherine Howell. The Howell family is full of wealthy over achievers, pillars of the community. Katherine has never felt that she fits into their perfect mold. She is timid and shy and she has a secret. Katherine talks to the dead. She keeps this secret well hidden until one day Katherine decides to relay a desperate message from the other side to her beloved 8th grade English teacher, Ms. Brown, and a downward spiral of events ensue. Katherine finds herself locked inside the walls of the Western Washington Hospital for the Insane causing her to wonder who she is and why she is able to do what she does. It is not until she meets equally tormented Ethan that she is able to truly consider whether her abilities are a blessing or a curse?
